Bring back the black

A poorly maintained canvas or mohair hood can ruin the overall look of your Classic. Here’s how to solve the problem.

Dry brush the soft-top and apply Renovo Canvas Cleaner. After about 30 minutes, scrub the top using a small brush (a nail brush is ideal) and warm water. Rinse off and let dry for at least an hour.

Evenly apply Renovo Soft-Top Reviver with a 2 inch paint brush. If necessary, a second coat can be applied after three hours.

Leave the soft-top to dry out overnight. Apply 2 coats of Renovo Ultra Proofer leaving 3 hours between coats.

Surface scratches and yellowing can be removed from the plastic windows with Renovo Window Polish. Allow to dry and polish off with a clean area of the cloth. For best results, keep putting very small amounts of the polish onto the cloth.

There is also a Renovo Ultra Proofer and a Soft-top cleaner that are specially formulated for vinyl hoods.

Renovo products are available from http://www.motoringclassics.co.uk

Prescott 2011 opener

We took the Midget to a glorious two days hill climbing at Prescott for the early May bank holiday. It was the first time out this year with the rebuilt competition engine and, with the new suspension setup, the first practice runs showed up the need to stiffen up the rear dampers.

Both John Yea and I were driving and we had handicap target times of 53 and 56.5 seconds respectively (he’s a much better driver than me!).  Our fastest timed runs were 54.45 and 56.36 which quite pleased me if not John.

The verdict on the suspension is that parabolic rear springs work well on a Midget but do need to be used with adjustable shock absorbers to get the setup just right.

Brands….oops!

In addition to competing in the ‘Motoring Classics Thoroughbred Sportscar’ race at Brands Hatch this weekend, John Yea also entered the two ‘Equipe GTS’ half hour races. All went quite well in Saturday’s race, but, at half distance in the Sunday race John lost it ‘big time’ at Paddock Hill bend while passing Nick Crewdson’s MGB. Fortunately, no damage was done and the Heritage MGB, with its new engine and gearbox, should provide us with plenty more entertainment (I mean good racing) during the 2011 season.

Brands Hatch – April 2011

It was a beautiful sunny weekend for the first race of 2011 in our own ‘Motoring Classics Thoroughbred Sportscar Championship’, hosted at Brands Hatch by the MG Car Club.  Here’s John Yea, in his Heritage MGB (35), coming up Hailwood Hill under the Bridge for the first time.

Jerry Knight held the lead for most of the 30 minute race in his immaculate Jaguar D-Type Replica (58) only to go off into the gravel, towards the end of the race, letting Jon Ellison through to be the eventual winner in his yellow TR6 (67).

Go to http://www.thoroughbredsportscars.net for full race reports on the race series.
